A Multi Center Prospective Observational Study of Nerve Repair and Reconstruction
Associated with Major Extremity Trauma.

The incidence of major peripheral nerve injuries (PNI) associated with orthopedic trauma in the U.S. Military and civilian populations has not been well defined. In military populations, recent studies report that PNI occurs in 20-30% of combat-related extremity trauma and in 15-25% of all wartime injuries. There are currently no evidence based guidelines on the best treatment for these injuries. Most data on surgical treatment is based on retrospective studies limited in scope or small prospective studies performed on sensory-only nerves (typically digital nerves) and do not include larger populations of mixed nerve injuries.


The purpose of this study is to conduct a multi-center prospective observational study that will capture detailed information about the treatment of peripheral nerve injury (PNI) resulting from upper extremity trauma and their long term outcomes in order to (1) characterize the incidence, type and treatment of PNI resulting from upper extremity trauma admitted to US military and civilian trauma centers and (2) to characterize the association between treatment (timing and approach) and outcomes.
