The R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma (STC) at the University of Maryland Medical Center is designated by law as the Primary Adult Resource Center for trauma care for the State of Maryland. STC receives approximately 6600 primary trauma admissions annually of which 40% arrive by air and 60% by ground. Many of these patients have multi-organ system injury with approximately 20% having an injury severity score of 18 or greater. The Division of Orthopaedic Traumatology at the University of Maryland includes 8 fellowship trained trauma specialists who provide all of the musculoskeletal trauma care at STC and perform approximately 3000 orthopaedic trauma cases annually. The division has a strong history of clinical research productivity. Ongoing clinical and biomechanical research efforts are funded by Centers for Disease Control (Department of Health and Human Services), Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation, AO and industry partners. Residents from nine programs nationally rotate to Shock Trauma regularly for orthopaedic trauma education including three military programs (Walter Reed, Bethesda and Tripler). The ACGME accredited trauma fellowship provides post-residency education in musculoskeletal trauma to 5 surgeons annually.
