The orthopaedic trauma service of OAM consists of five full-time orthopaedic trauma surgeons, who have fellowship or advanced traumatology training, provide the majority of the musculoskeletal trauma care, and specialize in the care of fractures and fracture-related problems.  The trauma group has performed over 4500 operative cases for fracture care or reconstruction. The Orthopaedic Trauma Program is 10 years old. A Clinical Research Division run by a full time PhD, research fellow MD, and multiple part-time employees support the research efforts. The Orthopaedic Trauma Team is an active member of the Orthopaedic Trauma Research Consortium and is actively engaged in over 25 research projects. The trauma team interacts clinically and performs surgery at Spectrum Health Medical Center, a 1061 tertiary care and Level 1 Trauma Center located in Western Michigan, serving a population area of over 1.4 million people.  Spectrum Health has an orthopaedic center of excellence with 90 beds dedicated to orthopaedics, 37 beds are specifically for orthopaedic trauma.  The Trauma Service is staffed with 12 full-time General Surgery Trauma/Critical Care Surgeons. The Orthopaedic Residency Program is within Grand Rapids Medical Education and Research Center in collaboration with Michigan State University and houses an active residency program of five residents a year. An orthopaedic trauma registry, digital radiographic database, and Van Andel Research Institute (VARI) provide assistance in the advancement of orthopaedic trauma research.
