Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NPM)

Nicknamed the "First and Finest," Naval Medical Center Portsmouth has the distinction of being the nation's first naval hospital. It has proudly served the health care and medical needs of the nation's military continuously since 1830.

The current hospital building, the Charette Health Care Center, opened in 1999. It has a capacity of nearly 300 beds, 259 of which are actively staffed. In 2010, the hospital cared for more than 18,000 inpatients and had nearly 1.4 million outpatient visits. Nine branch health clinics augment the hospital throughout Hampton Roads. The hospital staff consists of nearly 7,000 military, civilians, contractors and volunteers. Its military doctors, nurses and corpsmen routinely deploy to hotspots throughout the world in support of the medical needs of the nation's service members. With a budget of $443 million, Naval Medical Center Portsmouth provides an economic boost of $775 million to Hampton Roads each year.
