The Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) is a 465-operating-bed public teaching hospital and Level 1 Trauma Center located in downtown Minneapolis. In 2009, HCMC recorded 22,514 discharges and 102,271 Emergency Room visits. HCMC has an affiliated research foundation, the Minneapolis Medical Research Foundation, which ranks in the top 7th percent of all research institutions in amount of NIH funding. MMRF has an Office for Clinical Trials Training, as well as a center for Outcomes Research. The Dept. of Orthopedic Surgery at HCMC has a rich academic tradition, with four past or future OTA Presidents among its staff (Dr. Ramon Gustilo, Dr. Richard Kyle, Dr. David Templeman, and Dr. Andrew Schmidt). Drs. Pat Yoon and Tom Varecka are also members of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association, and Drs. Varecka, Templeman, and Schmidt have all served as Chair of the OTA Program Committee. HCMC is affiliated with the University of Minnesota, and serves as the training site for U of M residents, as well as having a fellowship in Orthopedic Trauma since 1998.

Regions Hospital is certified as a Level I Trauma Center for adults and for children serving Minnesota and western Wisconsin for more than 130 years. In 2009, Regions hospital had 18,059 emergency room admissions and 74,472 ER visits with 1,286 orthopaedic cases.
