The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is an 762 bed tertiary care and Level 1 Trauma Center located in the Eastern portion of the state of Iowa. It serves a rural population of nearly 3 million. The Orthopedic Department has an excellent residency training program with 30 residents all of whom are at the University Hospital or the VA with four residents on the orthopedic trauma service. Three full time faculty members supervise all of the orthopedic trauma care and are assisted by the four residents and one PA. There is a trauma nurse coordinator and a full time research assistant. The General Surgery Trauma Service admits almost 2500 trauma patients per year. The orthopedic department has the most NIH funding of any orthopedic department in the country. The orthopedic trauma faculties are active participants in this research enterprise serving as PI's on two and co-PI's on three additional current NIH grants. Our trauma research program is also funded by the CDC, The Arthritis Foundation, OTA, AO and WAO. We have excellent orthopedic biomechanics and cell biology laboratories. The major focus of trauma research has been clinical and basic scientific investigation of post traumatic osteoarthritis and long term trauma patient follow up studies.
