Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center (WFU)

The Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center (WFUBMC) is an 885 bed tertiary care and Level 1 Trauma Center located in the Northern Piedmont section of North Carolina, serving a 24 county area (19 in northwest North Carolina and five in Southern Virginia – approximately 1.3 million inhabitants). The Medical Center has 22 subsidiary or affiliate hospitals and operates more than 100 outreach activities throughout the region, including satellite clinics, health fairs, consulting services and medical director services. It provides a continuum of care that includes primary care centers, outpatient rehabilitation, dialysis centers and home health care. The Medical Center's component institutions carry out a joint mission of patient care, education, research, and community service. The Medical Center's two main components are North Carolina Baptist Hospital and Wake Forest University Health Sciences, which includes the Wake Forest University School of Medicine and Wake Forest University Physicians (WFUP).

The Trauma Service is staffed with seven fulltime General Surgery Trauma/Critical Care Surgeons. Four fulltime Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeons provide the majority of the musculoskeletal trauma care. The Orthopaedic Department houses an active residency program and one orthopaedic trauma fellow each year. Over 2,800 trauma patient are admitted annually and the center is one of the state's two largest (along with Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte) with each contributing nearly twice the number of entrants to the state trauma registry than their closest "competitor." WFUBMC has been a major contributor to a host of successful multicenter projects including LEAP, SPRINT, BEST-ALL, and CIREN. The Orthopaedic Department's prominent role in these successful multicenter endeavors and the many publications and presentations resulting from the completion of these trials serve as an affirmation of their center's ability and willingness to commit and responsibly follow through on projects that prioritize collaboration and prospective outcomes research of the highest quality.
